New Confirmed Canon 85mm F1.4L IS

This week a rumor was confirmed that Canon will be releasing a new 85mm f1.4 L-Lens with image stabilization. 85mm lenses have been known for making great portrait lenses on full-frame and crop sensor cameras. Being more telephoto than 50mm, it compresses the image more and brings the background closer to the subject. Here is a video if you’re more interested!

But this new 85mm lens does not appear to be in competition with either of them. Being an L lens, it will likely be priced similarly to the 85mm f1.2, but whereas the f1.2 targets studio photographers, the new lens will likely target street photographers and photojournalists – photographers who actually require X and Y axis image stabilization.

New Confirmed Fuji GF 110mm F2 WR LM Lens

Another lens rumor that has been confirmed is for Fuji. They will be announcing their 110mm F2 WR LM lens for their GFX series of cameras. The Fuji GFX 50S has a larger sensor than what is available in any full frame camera. At 44mm x 33mm, it’s still smaller than what is found in other medium format cameras – like Hasselblad or Pentax – but with a the 50S being 1/4 the price, Fuji still gets the job done.

Because the sensor size is so much larger than full-frame, the crop factor of the Fuji sensor is 0.79x, making the new 110mm lens equivalent to roughly 87mm on a full-frame camera. The lens is also weather resistant, making it a perfect companion for landscape and street photographers.

It does have a linear motor, which is often colloquially referred to as a “fly-by-wire” focusing system. For photographers who prefer manual focusing. This type of focusing system is known for being a huge pain for anyone who pays attention to lens markings and uses zone focusing.

The price is estimated at $2800, but there is no confirmation as of yet.

Panasonic GH5 Auto-focusing Issues?

Max Yuryev also did a detailed review of some auto-focusing issues found in the Panasonic GH5.

Is the Panasonic GH5’s Auto-focusing System Doomed? Can we Fix it?

Earlier this week FStoppers reported on some auto focusing issues they’ve noticed after using the Panasonic GH5. Turns out that Max Yuryev wasn’t the only one who noticed.

Sometimes it’s quick, sometimes it’s slow, sometimes it hunts constantly even if the subject is totally stationary, and occasionally it won’t focus at all. What makes this even more strange is that at times the camera will create a box over your subjects face (in face detection mode) showing that it does in fact know where the subject is, but it still won’t focus.

At first most people felt that this could be fixed with a simple firmware update. But after realizing the Panasonic GH5’s auto focusing system uses contrast detection, the solution could be more complicated.

Both Sony and Canon use a hybrid on-sensor phase detection and contrast detection system, which explains why auto-focusing on their more recent cameras are clearly more accurate than the Panasonic GH5’s.

However these issues only affect a small number of people, like vloggers, or people who don’t like manually focusing for video.
